Douglas Schmidt is a Professor of Computer Science at Vanderbilt University and Visiting Scientist at the Carnegie Mellon Software Engineering Institute (SEI). He was previously Chief Technology Officer at the SEI, a program manager at DARPA, and a member of the Air Force Scientific Advisory Board. His research focuses on software patterns, optimization techniques, and empirical analyses of middleware frameworks. He has published 10 books and more than 500 papers. Dr. Schmidt received BS and MA degrees in sociology from the College of William and Mary and MS and PhD degrees in computer science from the University of California–Irvine.
